IOM Worlds – Just Watched the Final Day !!

Have just watched the final day from the Gladstone Worlds. Brilliantly exciting viewing and the organisation and presentation was simply awesome.

A huge well done to Datchet Members – Nigel, David and Sean. Really terrific and enjoyed watching you all compete. Thank you.

To the guys at the top – what a close finish!! So exciting to watch ! One point !!

For the Bar Chat ….adding fuel to the fire:-

I was intrigued at the number of each design that was entered in the regatta. The VickersRC boats seem hugely popular in Australia and New Zealand and rightly so. The Britpop of ANZ perhaps! Along with the Venti the Vickers boats had around 20 qualifiers a piece. From the Northern Hemisphere, the very new VISS design had 7 entries. Simply fewer VISS’s there as it’s a pretty new product, from a land far away.

The designs all look to perform about the same to me. Do they to you`? Do you suppose designers have converged on the optimum shape by now? Let’s face it, just like at any Club the thing that counts most is “who is driving”, and there were some amazing sailors at Gladstone.

When you were watching boat on boat situations, did you visually get an impression of what the quick designs were? The camerawork tended to follow Ian Vickers a lot with his V12, and my gosh his boat looked quick to me. Fabulous.

But Formula One has a Constructors Championship which often leads to interesting differences when viewed alongside the Drivers Championship. I wondered if there was a way to compare design success alongside skipper success.

So I tried looking at the performance of the top four boats of each design… and then the top five boats. This is what I found !!

Next time we are in the clubhouse queueing for coffees, we can talk about this !!

Watching IOM Worlds Online

You are probably all way ahead of me, but each morning now if I tune in to the IOM Worlds Website, I can watch all the previous day’s racing live with commentary and everything.

Camera work (including drones) is excellent, close-ups etc. Commentary is pretty well informed too. Also interviews with the top competitors is very entertaining.

The button to select is “LIVE” but of course as it’s typically 6am in Gladstone when I watch, what you get is the whole of the previous day (and skip through the adverts!)

I find it easier to set up on the laptop than the iPhone for some reason.

October 20th – Storm Ashley Sweeps Through… Hugh and Dorian Went Match Racing!!

I have to admit, by mid-morning the weather man was correct. Rain started to set in, gusts became intense – and by late morning the M25 drive home was disgusting and slow !! Currently typing at about 4pm, sitting snug at home with 45mph gusts outside 🙂

Our morning coffee line was busy watching three K1 keelboats in their race being blown completely flat…. and perhaps the racing at the America’s Cup has us all inspired,… Suddenly after bacon rolls, Hugh and Dorian donned their sou’wester gear, got their C rigs out and popped their One Metres in for a spot of match racing from the North Beach!!

The bottom of the north steps were twenty feet from the water’s edge (I’d have sworn the Club Manager just three weeks ago had shown me that the steps reached the water on that day…) so as new boy I was intrigued to see how launching from the beach was going to work. I went over to their cars without full rain gear, but quickly got cold so made it back to the Club to watch from there (!). Watching through the steam coming off a mug of tea has its merits.

H & D ignored the steps, and walked down the slip to the north beach. Then to my astonishment, H waded in wearing wellington boots, and launched both the One Metres. So tip number one for me – “bring your wellies, just in case”. I’m guessing OK for One Metres, but Marbleheads need a spot more keel depth.

Depends on slope of the beach probably, not to mention the height of your wellingtons, but it looked OK for our noble race officer just there. It caused quite a stir in the clubhouse crowd watching Hugh wade in, but HS suddenly pointed out the obvious, “You could wear your dry suit and dinghy boots”. Good point actually, if I can remember where they are.
