IOM Sunday – Light Breezes But a Ton of Fun…!!

( Mummy with Baby Ducks give Nigel a Swim-Past )

We had six One Metres with us today, including a potential new member! Phil, Craig, Nigel, Dorian, Richard from the club. Honestly the breeze was a bit light, but there was always enough to go round and we had a blast! Craig was PROing and wisely in these conditions set us a bunch of sprint races out to a windward mark and back. Far enough – We had plenty of fun and all learned a lot.

Doctor Dorian did a couple of amazing IOM tuning clinics in the coffee break, and as one of the happy recipients I can only say how grateful and amazed I was !!

The racing adjourned for lunch and then the Eastbourne victory trio of Nigel, Dorian and Craig put in some serious boat-on-boat tuning practice. As ever with this sport you can often learn more by watching the top personalities than by competing against them!! It was really impressive – lots of tweaking, practice starts, in phase and out of phase tacking and so on. Surprisingly revealing and great to see the two Proteus design boats going so well…. Nigel was especially nippy today !!

The sharp eyed DRS members will notice first our new on-course windsocks, but also the idea needs an upward tweak to get the sock tails out of the water. PH is on it !!

(Our Datchet Heroes from Eastbourne – left to right Nigel, Dorian and Craig)

Honestly when these guys are concentrating you can feel the vibrations in the banter !

Nigel – just tweaking the spoodler adjuster

Dorian in front – Craig and Nigel in pursuit!

Windsor in the distance, on-course Windsock has a sense of humour

Next week the IOM Rankings event – two days, 35-40 entrants !!

Sunday Marbleheads….!!

What a simply stunning day at Datchet today. The Club was having an open weekend. It looked jolly successful and was also doing a fund raiser for the local hospice. I noted one of the activities was a guided walk around the perimeter of the lake (3miles/5km) for a £10 fee. I was amazed at the number of people who entered … 120 !!

Unusually dead flat waters, but a nice medium B Rig Breeze. We had four boats racing (three F6’s and a Grunge ), plus in a non-racing capacity we had Phil, Craig, David Thomas from Australia (with boat!) and Richard.

I paused with the chatter for a couple of races where Phil had borrowed Graham’s F6. I must say, it absolutely flew in both races and won by really handsome margins. Screaming along. Very impressive on all fronts.

Race report and scores from the Sailing Secretary in due course.

Marblehead Sunday – Spring Series Starter – February 2nd… !!

Fantastic day at Datchet today – the Club was very lively with Club Racing, plus 70 ILCA’s around the place – we had a jolly galley and Clubroom ! The first day of the Spring Series – We had around half a dozen Marbleheads which given the temperature was pretty good 🙂

It was whisper light for the first part of the morning – the ILCAs seemed to stay ashore, but of course we could get the Marbleheads going pretty well. We got some terrific races in – Rob was there developing his new F6 and going like a rocket. Graham has his new self built Red Ant swing rig in action – going jolly well too. Around midday some proper breeze arrived and another few epic races were completed. For myself, I learned a whole load about swing rigs today – members are really friendly and supportive.

Lots of chatter in the bar afterwards about the 2026 IOM Datchet worlds. Was great to hear!

Results to follow.
