Glassfibre Proteus – Sheeting ….!!

While our “big boys” were racing the IOM Rankings in West Lancs on Sunday, the rest of us were lucky enough to get a good look at the latest (voluptuous!) glassfibre prototype of the Proteus.

Gosh, that boat is going to be light at the ends. Fantastic. Plus a proprietary Red Ant, faster thinner stiffer lighter Fin-Set. The main focus of discussion though on Sunday was the sheeting system. This version is the semi-under-deck system that we have on our F6 Marbleheads. Very neat it was too (clever under-deck sealed tubes). We had wide ranging discussion as to whether it should be totally under the deck and emerge at PTFE deck ferrules…. or indeed at the other extreme, have it all on deck so you can fix it in a hurry. Perhaps all three will be options, we shall see. It didn’t seem appropriate to photograph the somewhat secret section amidships, but suffice it to say that there is a 3D printed section within there with everything integrated and adding rigidity – making it a kind of ‘hybrid’ in a way. Very clever. Some development happening at the shroud anchorages too… and not visible in the photo there is one of those clever magnetic jib tracks, special sheet eye positions… just lots of trickle down technology from F6, and loads of unique IP in there. Without correctors, the boat is extremely light yet amazingly stiff. Really stiff.

As you probably know, it is being built by K7 Yachts. I believe there are several European orders placed already, but if interested you can put your name down quickly. Just hurry.

I did.

IOMs on Marblehead Day – Club Racing Sunday 4th January !!

Well, seven of us were there today – three of us with our hands either thrust deep into our Rooster Robes … or hugging hot mugs of tea!! Gosh it was cold !! Around zero!!

The light was crystal clear and the sky a magical blue. The lake looked amazing and is full to the top.

We had three Proteus and a Viss…. all looking good. One Proteus (very smart) was wearing great looking Red Ant sails which I’d not seen before. We also had a chance to inspect the new mid-ship section print of the Proteus – very clever stuff going on there.

Four of us had Rooster Robes on – like Club uniform 🙂 Rooster will be at the Worlds – I wonder of we can get Rooster to print them with the IOM Worlds logo when the Championships are on…. must ask.

It was scheduled to be a Marblehead Sunday, but the Team GBR chaps won the vote to switch to IOM training instead. Lots of short order racing – brilliant to watch and very close!! We paused for lunch but the top guys went out on the south course for more afternoon training. As the weather warms up, we are expecting more Team GBR skippers to join in.

Beginner’s Guide to Winches and Drums

I was going to start a fresh item on Winches and Drums, but have lacked the time to get on with it.

Instead, take a look at this page (link below) on Lester Gilbert’s fabulous IOM website. It;s possibly a little dated now, but I found it very good for :-

1/ Understanding more about how the basics of how the transmitter joystick is actually talking to the winch.

2/ Get the basics of a plain drum, spiral drum designs and drum sizes versus winch power

3/ The spiral drum is really clever in its intent, but realise that electronics might have taken over this role. Now we have Throttle-curve on our transmitters plus the latest Stinger winches have this function onboard in their software.

4/ Good simple explanation, with diagrams, of Open Loop and Closed Loop sheeting systems – which I found great.
