Glassfibre Proteus – Sheeting ….!!

While our “big boys” were racing the IOM Rankings in West Lancs on Sunday, the rest of us were lucky enough to get a good look at the latest (voluptuous!) glassfibre prototype of the Proteus.

Gosh, that boat is going to be light at the ends. Fantastic. Plus a proprietary Red Ant, faster thinner stiffer lighter Fin-Set. The main focus of discussion though on Sunday was the sheeting system. This version is the semi-under-deck system that we have on our F6 Marbleheads. Very neat it was too (clever under-deck sealed tubes). We had wide ranging discussion as to whether it should be totally under the deck and emerge at PTFE deck ferrules…. or indeed at the other extreme, have it all on deck so you can fix it in a hurry. Perhaps all three will be options, we shall see. It didn’t seem appropriate to photograph the somewhat secret section amidships, but suffice it to say that there is a 3D printed section within there with everything integrated and adding rigidity – making it a kind of ‘hybrid’ in a way. Very clever. Some development happening at the shroud anchorages too… and not visible in the photo there is one of those clever magnetic jib tracks, special sheet eye positions… just lots of trickle down technology from F6, and loads of unique IP in there. Without correctors, the boat is extremely light yet amazingly stiff. Really stiff.

As you probably know, it is being built by K7 Yachts. I believe there are several European orders placed already, but if interested you can put your name down quickly. Just hurry.

A Winch is a Winch…??

I have both Stinger and RMG Winches here. The mounts are interchangeable, I believe. When you are starting out with radio sailing, it seems to naive me that a winch is a winch. Not so!! It’s not easy for the learner to understand what the finer points are about!! I didn’t even realise that there were 5 models of RMG for example. The differing drum sizes merit thinking about.

Our Trial Sail Program – and The New F6 Marblehead !!

If you are thinking of taking up any new sport, new pastime, new hobby … well, you need to try it first, don’t you agree?! It can sometimes be a little tricky to arrange in radio sailing.

For quite a while, Datchet has had a very smart International One Metre Class loan boat available for newcomers to try.

Today we are making a huge leap with our Trial Sail program. We are adding a 2023 F6 demonstrator Marblehead to the program, supplied by the UK builder K7Yachts!! As I write, well… it’s brand new! Our demo boat is finished in smart blue and looks fantastic. It’s the same hull shape as the 2023 UK Champion.

Why are we adding a Marblehead? To start with, the Marblehead is beautifully suited to our 475 acre lake and our ‘wave’ conditions. They are very fast on these waters and our fleet is extremely active. We race them every alternate Sunday through our 10 month formal season, plus Open Meetings etc.

It’s an interesting time in Radio Sailing. Builder lead times for One Metres is extremely long and measured usually in years. You can get a Marblehead from K7 in months not years. Here is the thing that surprised me – contrary to popular belief, a new Marblehead fitted up for at least Club Racing comes in at a substantially lower cost than the bill for my new One Metre.
